Wizard World Comic Con came to Madison and it was, in a word, awesome. Ian's sent Chewbacca to check it out and report back to us. It took a while to translate it but here's what he had to say about it. For forty years if you lived in the Midwest and wanted to see an honest to goodness comic book convention you had to truck it down to Chicago. In 2015 all that changed with "Wizard World Madison" hosted at the Alliant Energy Center. Thousands of rabid fan-boys and -girls descended on our great city in search of swag bags, autographs, and photo-ops, amazing costumes, celebrity meet and greets, industry Q & A Panels, dozens of booths with unique merchandise, board game designers and comic book artists. It truly had something for everyone, whether you nerd out over Power Rangers or Caped Crusaders, if you love How to Train Your Dragon or Bilbo Baggins -- Comic Con is the one place for all Magic Card Players and Vampire Slayers. If you were there and not having a good time, you’re just a plain old Grinch. Wait, no, I take that back; the Grinch was actually there, and was having the time of his life. A few other special guests included William Shatner (Captain Kirk!), Bruce Campbell (Ash), Edward James Almos (Admiral Odama), Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk), Eliza Dushku (Faith), James Masterson (Spike), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zedmore), George Wendt (Norm!). The artist area had both established veteran comic creators with titles under their belts (such as Spider-Man, Punisher, Hulk, and Superman) and upstarts pushing their very first book. Artists were there to meet fans and show off their work to folks who may not be familiar. They were offering comics, single art prints, and even custom art commissions -- for a very reasonable fee you could get a one-of-a-kind personalized sketch from a published professional! But what made Comic Con a must-see experience was the multitudes of hardcore fans showing up in elaborate costumes and Madison did not disappoint. Walking the show room floor you saw characters from every corner of the universe (and beyond). Saturday night ended with a costume contest hosted by Cosplay expert Oki Cospi and The Green Power Ranger, Jason David Frank! Congratulations to the winners: Groot, Toothless and Hiccup, Dr. Doom, Maleficent, and Brotherhood of Steel Soldier. While the following may not have taken home the trophy they were magnificent and deserve a big shout-out: Chung-Li, Captain America, Obi-Wan, Carmen Sandiego, Batman & His Villains, The Doctor & His Tardis, Cobra Commander, Loki, Mac The Super Trooper, and Goku (those are just the ones I recognized) Really well done everyone! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for next year!
