May means one thing around here at Ian’s Pizza. May means we pay homage to our favorite non-pizza food, The Burger. Nothing says, “Let’s kick off summer!” than a whole month of weekly specials themed around America’s food, the burger. In traditional Ian’s fashion, not only do we pay homage to burgers, we take it one step further. All through May you can taste some of our favorite local burgers done by quirky, fun, sometimes hole-in-the-wall places that embody the same creativity and excitement that we like to think our pizza does. In its third year, we’ve explored everything from cream cheese to fried onions to black beans and everything in between. We have a feeling that you’re going to enjoy this years selections.
Week 1: AJ Bomber’s “Barrie Burger” – The Barrie Burger slice features chunky peanut butter sauce topped with premium ground beef, bacon, and American cheese. AJ Bombers has locations in both Madison and Milwaukee and the best way to sum up this kitschy, fun restaurant and bar is three simple words: P-Nuts, Burgers, & Beer. AJ Bombers boasts winnings of Travel Channel’s “FOOD WARS” and Madison Magazine’s “Madison’s Best Burger” and you may even recall a January evening in 2012 where Ian’s and Bombers went head to head in a Late Night Food Battle where everyone in Madison came out the winner. Find AJ Bombers on the web at: ajbombers.com.
Week 2: Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry’s “Bayou Burger” – The Bayou Burger slice features ground beef with cajun mayonnaise sauce, pepperjack cheese, and Louisiana hot sauce, finished with hand-battered onion straws. Dotty’s opened in Madison in 1975 and if you’ve been around Madison for any length of time, you probably recognize Dotty’s as a Madison burger institution. Winner of Madison’s Best Burger many times over, Dotty’s has an ever-changing menu of delicious burgers made with local ingredients. Whether you’re surfing downtown for a happy hour or going to a Badger game at the Kohl Center, Dotty’s is sure to impress. Oh, and they make a pretty great neighbor too. Find Dotty’s on the web at: www.dottydumplingsdowry.com.
Week 3: Hooligan’s Super Bar’s “Beelzaburger” – The Beelzaburger slice starts with a spicy chipotle-cheese sauce, then we layer ground beef, bacon, sliced jalapenos, pepperjack cheese, tomato, and lettuce. Hooligan’s Super Bar has been a Milwaukee East Side staple since 1936 and was rated “Best Bar Food” in ALL of Milwaukee by OnMilwaukee.com. Just down the street from our North Ave store in Milwaukee, we’re no stranger to the burger menu at Hooligan’s. Find Hooligan’s on the web at: www.hooliganssuperbar.com.
Week 4: DLUX’s “The D-LUX” – The D-LUX slice starts with ground beef on a creamy bleu cheese base finished with arugula and a port wine-onion marmalade. DLUX is a relative newcomer to the Madison burger scene but has been making a splash since opening. Their menu highlights unique creations such as the port wine-onion marmalade featured on this slice and a delicious tomato jam featured on their Farmhouse burger. Catch DLUX just off the square and on the web at: www.dluxmadison.com.
